With many Rwandan men not participating in the family planning program, others have no idea that they can play a role in this program which they say concerns women.
Both man and woman, they are concerned with the management and the development of the family so family, making family planning a concern of both parts as it is with the family.
Kalisa says family planning is a man’s responsibility
According to Aimable Kalisa a resident of Rusiga sector in Rulindo district who had vasectomy, family planning is a good step a family can take towards development especially if it was agreed upon by the couple.
Aimable Kalisa decided on participating in family planning after realizing his wife gave birth consecutively and their family was not developing but instead getting poorer.
“Making this decision improved the family relationship and harmony, we always conflicted due to family situations and lack of the necessary basics but that subsided” says Kalisa.
“I decided on family planning to reduce the burden on my wife who was either pregnant or breast feeding, constant diseases in children among the many things could not allow us to develop.
Kalisa says a lot of things have changed in his family ever since he joined family planning program. “I farm and store the produce instead of taking everything to the market for survival as I used to do. My children are now going to school, we get mutuelle de santé medical insurance on time, my wife is now strong and we both work for our family development.”
Kalisa says men should support their wives by being responsible of the family welfare, of the children being born and participate in family planning for it concerns them as well. Vasectomy does not affect one’s maleness; in fact it gives one the confidence of no risk of unwanted pregnancies.”
Jean D’Amour Manirafasha the health officer in Rulindo district says in the newly developed campaign to eradicate poverty in 500 days, include encouraging people to participate in family planning for many children usually lead to poverty.
