Many couples in Muhanga District have been reported that they cannot read or write as most of them waited on the executive secretary of Nyamabuye sector to come over and help them legalize their marriage certificates.
Out of (10) ten couples that got married by law, five of them could not read prompting the official who was marrying them to read out the vows and the couples repeating after him word by word.
One of the couples who cannot read or write said that hard and difficult financial situation in his childhood limited his going to school since he was an orphan who took care of himself and had no knowledge that education is vital.
He goes on to say that attending adult schools which are everywhere in the sector won’t be easy for him due to lack of time since he works hard all day to support his wife and children, however, his wife Francoise Ingabire can read and write.
Jean Baptiste Mugunga the executive secretary of Nyamabuye sector who indorsed the mass wedding ceremony asked the married couples to attend adult classes. He said it is a pity for people in this generation not to know how to read or write when adult classes were introduced in every part of the country particularly in this sector.
Mugunga says that this year 2013, the sector has a program to teach about 280 people in adult education program in about 25 centers available in Nyamabuye sectors.
